Greetings Engineering Pathway Community:
We are pleased to announce new concepts for the redesign of the Engineering Pathway community site. The image feedback blog was released earlier. We are now releasing the blog for logo concepts, as well as layout redesign features.
Please go the the EP redesign site to see the options, but return to this site to give us feedback. Options for feedback (your vote) are for:
- logo concepts (circles, squares, paths, stripes, swoops, or others)
- Associated taglines
- Layout options (as shown in the logo concept pages: number of images, color scheme, large search box features, layout, etc.)
- Font size, print-friendly option
We’d love to get your feedback as to which logo concept, color scheme, and layout option to develop further. We can’t decide as we like them all!! So help us out in redesigning the Engineering Pathway site – go to: http://epredesign.begins-here.com/index.html.

Regarding designs, the squares and stripes themes seem to rigid to me, and I hope that people will look at engineering as a more fluid and creative process. I like the mixed font of the squares version though. – KC

Should have added before submitting that I like the swoop the best, with circles a close second.

Our student team thought of using the letters EP to spell out taglines. So mix words that begin with E and P together.

Other taglines:
Here is one that could come off of the i:
imagine, innovate, inspire
More pathway taglines
Engineer your (own) path
Create your (own) path
5 Tracy Camp // Apr 19, 2008 at 6:04 pm
All of these have something good. The ones I like the LEAST (by far) are squares and stripes. The one I like the MOST is swoop … it doesn’t have a tagline … maybe add to the right … not sure which tag would be best.
A VERY close runner up (maybe even my fav) is the Other: A. 1 … I think this Other A.1 would look really nice with the tagline “Discover your path”.
One concern with using EP in tagline such as “Explore and Play” is that then the actual meaning for EP (Eng Pathways) is diminished.
My $0.02. Thanks for letting us participate in the process!
6 Tom Litzinger // Apr 23, 2008 at 11:23 am
Logo: Swoop:A
Tagline: “Discover your futureâ€
Overall design: I prefer the single large image, especially if it can be dynamic. I find it draws my attention more than smaller images and it also allows more room for the text describing EP.
Fonts: I prefer the small font option. The text in all caps looks too large in the medium and large fonts.
7 Paul Klenk // Apr 28, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Logos: The only one I don’t like much is the stripes one.
Tagline: I like:
“Create your path”
I was going to say that I also like “Discover your path” and it is also very good, but I think
“create” better represents engineers while “discover” would better represent scientists. Another option related to those taglines and one of the messages that tested well for engineering education that might also resonate with teachers could be:
“Create the future”
Just glancing through the overall design pages, I like 2-3 images on the top with no sentences above the search lines. I feel like less text on the home page is better and putting the text that we do want at the bottom is a good because then it doesn’t dominate the page as much. 4 images is too many, though as the images become small.
Those are just my quick looks at this.

Just to leave my two cents I like the Swoops theme. I believe it best conveys a feeling of an engineering ‘pathway’. I also think it can translate well onto other media such as business cards, letterhead, advertisements and still make sense. However they all look really good. But I will say my least favorite, ironically enough, is the path theme. The EP seems a bit blocky.
9 Andi (for Tom Litzinger) // Apr 29, 2008 at 11:22 am
Tom Litzinger also said, “I would like to suggest a new tagline – ‘Discover your future.’ I suggest it because it avoids repetition of any part of the website name.”
10 Andi // Apr 29, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Just a reminder to scroll down each of the 6 logo concept pages, as there a few variations to each theme – not sure all are being seen. Thanks!
11 Lora // May 6, 2008 at 1:37 pm
I like the swoopy one and the second square-y one. They both seem to emphasize the “pathway” part of “engineering pathway”, which is kind of cool. Makes engineering a bit more of a journey. :D
12 Vicente // May 7, 2008 at 12:49 pm
I like the circles A and D3 and the Other A3. They kind of imply movement and action.
For the tagline, I like: Discover, learn and connect, and Explore your path.
But all of the alternatives are really great.
Thanks for the invitation to participate.
13 Ryan Shelby // May 9, 2008 at 1:47 pm
I really like the “EP path” logo the best. To me, it signifies progression throughout my engineering career and endeavors.
My second favorite theme is the swoop design. Again, this is another design shows forward progress.
I strongly dislike the circle, squares, and bar designs. These designs don’t have any patterns and seem to be disorienting.
I hope this helps everyone.
14 Ryan Duchin // May 9, 2008 at 2:07 pm
My favorite is the ‘squares’ design (squares B.1 the best)- it shows a log of ingenuity and design, although my second favorite is the circles theme.
My favorite tagline is Explore the Possibilities or possibly Excite the Psyche of Engines of Progress – they all sound exciting and captivating. good job!
15 John Carroll // May 9, 2008 at 2:12 pm
I like the squares idea the best… but I don’t really think any of them are that could. They’re all kinda confusing. I think you could do better.
16 Adam // May 9, 2008 at 2:15 pm
I liked option A.2 and the Swoop for design. I like the fluidity of the lines and the creation of a path through those swoops.
I also like the tagline, “one path, many journeys” or something to that effect.
I think the design encompasses that as well, offering differnt lines to follow in its design. And specific to A.2, the man running.
17 Nicole Lai // May 9, 2008 at 2:26 pm
I like circles
18 Steven Choi // May 9, 2008 at 2:49 pm
I would choose the path, but it’s mostly because I think it would be great if it had the right tagline. I came up with these:
“Your choices. Your path. Your future. Your life.”
“Your life is a journey. We’re the scenic route.”
“The journey’s just begun.”
I also like the swoops and the circles.
19 Neha Chhabra // May 9, 2008 at 3:03 pm
My favorite is the swoop design, with the squares coming in second. I rate the stripe one the lowest.
My favorite logo for EP is “Engines of Progress”. I think it says a lot about the career in a succinct way.
I also like the tagline “one path, many journeys” as Adam mentioned above.

Vote:
CIRCLES – The circles look bright and good. I like the general orientation of the circles. I like that their orientation is not symmetrical. This makes the web browser not notice how simple the design is. The squares are ugly and dark. Path: A.1 is slightly too plain, and people probably won’t notice it. The Stripes are not creative. Swoop A does not match the look of the website.
DISCOVER YOUR PATH – This tag line is truthful, and entices the web browser to explore the career fields of engineering. Tag lines such as “discover your future” implies that the web browser has already decided to be an engineer, and that one of the career fields in the website is going to be the web browser’s career. High school students care more about deciding what college to go to and less about what they will be when they’re old. “Path” implies college, internships, and research. “Future” implies careers, jobs, and occupations. The implications of “path” is more interesting and relevant to the information that the web browser is trying to find.
The new layout is way better than the current layout. I wouldn’t set half English / half Spanish as default. There should be an “Espagnol” option instead.
MEDIUM FONT – trust me
21 Dominic Beard // May 9, 2008 at 5:46 pm
My favorite logo is the Path A.2 device. The imagery is subtly restrained and the search box is functional. Admittedly, I tend to gravitate to more boring graphics. Circles A also would probably do the trick. The overall new layout I must say is a big improvement over the old one by any measure.
I like “Engineers Help Shape the Future – …” for the message.
For the tagline, the ones that resonate with me are Because Dreams Need Doing and Discover Your Path
22 Terry Liu // May 9, 2008 at 7:58 pm
I like the circles (A) design best.It is simple whereas the others seem a little out of place…too flashy? Anyway, the circles attracted me most for some reason.
For the message, I agree that EP should not be used as an acronym for anything else since it already stands for something. Since we’re talking about pathways I think something like “Shaping the future one step at a time.” or something would be nice. Maybe that is too long?
23 Che Liu // May 9, 2008 at 8:32 pm
I like the path design mainly because I feel that the colors of the other designs don’t work well together. However, I might still like the “Path” best because it has less clutter; the shapes make the site seem more confusing in my opinion.
I like “Discover your path” because it is broad enough to encompass many things, while still giving a broad overview of what this website is supposed to do.
For the layout, the new one is better mainly becuase there are less links. The large number of current links is not too aesthetically appealing in my opinion.
24 Alex Trahan // May 10, 2008 at 9:13 pm
I think the Swoop and Circles designs look best. The others seem too blocky and add a very regimented feel to the page. I find the smoother designs more inviting.
25 Lisa Veliz // May 11, 2008 at 9:44 am
I like the swoop design for the main logo, but I think the words “engineering pathway” could be written in a nicer font.
preferred taglines:
“discover, learn, and connect”
“because dreams need doing”
“turning ideas into reality”
in general, i think the very abstract taglines don’t get to the point of what the website is supposed to provide. It would be nicer if the tagline was a bit more descriptive.
picture preference:
the three girls working on a project is the most applicable to what the site is about; i think the project-based pictures are most effective at communicating the message. maybe there could be more pictures of groups working on projects (include some pics of teens as well)
good luck on designing the site! i’m excited to see the updated version!

i like squares A the best. it has nice shadows
tagline?:
Think and Create
27 Jono Hey // May 13, 2008 at 7:32 am
I like the circles (C onwards), stripes (particularly A.2 – though there wasn’t an associated site layout) and swoop. I find the squares a little dull, and the running man kind of cheesy.
I like ‘Create your future’ as a tag – I feel that it captures so much of what engineers actually do (although really it’s everyone’s future)
A great selection!
28 Matt Ohland // May 14, 2008 at 8:25 pm
In spite of the fact that Squares.D looks is reminiscent of the Candyland board, I don’t like it much.
I really like Other.1 quite a bit, but seem to be in the minority. I like the idea of having a person and multiple pathways. For that reason, the “one path, many journeys” doesn’t resonate with me. I think there are many paths and many journeys. There are lots of good messages.
I like the swoops design (either of them) just fine.
29 Mindy Zarske // May 15, 2008 at 11:59 am
So, I am drawn toward the path and swoop designs more than the rest. I also like the font on the squares design. I prefer medium font sizes on the pages.
As for tagline, I like the word “create” because it implies an action to actually do something with your knowledge. I like “create your future.”
I like the photos of engineers and students in action, designing and creating things to benefit the future. Preferably two or more people engaged in engineering.
30 Andi // May 15, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Hi,
Several have commented, so I’d like to reiterate – the css live mini-site demonstrates the ability to change style sheets to control font-size, or switch to a print version. The choice of font size or print version would be available to the end user, probably via small buttons or links… In other words, all of the font sizes demo’d would be available to the user. A
31 Kyle Criner // May 15, 2008 at 8:45 pm
I like the squares the most, but the circles would be ok as well. Those two would best represent a “pathway. The bars remind me of a barcode, and I also do not like the running person. Those do not suggest “engineering” to me.
32 Martha Cyr // May 16, 2008 at 5:23 am
I think that the EP path is the most appealing, and prefer the A.2 or A.3 as the colors look more ‘green/good environment’ appropriate. But the layout of that page with all the images across the top is too busy. I prefer the layout of swoop page with the single image – much cleaner looking.
The tagline that I think best represents what the site contains is “Discover, Learn, & Connect”
33 Denise Carlson // May 16, 2008 at 9:20 pm
My 2 cents…
LOGOS
Three best logos:
Circles A (arrangement and variety of colors suggests a mingling of ideas, people and solutions coming together to make a path and also working independently)
Swoop A – only if the heavy “boy colors” are lightened (perhaps to tangerine, turquoise, milk chocolate brown and celery green)
Path A.3 is pleasing in its color tones; this one could work (most of the Path logos are too overpowering with the block letters and stark color contrasts) Idea: If go with this logo, do a mouse hover-over on the logo rotating through an endless number of fun re-interpretations of the EP acronym. Examples: Emagine your imPact, dEsign exPerience, Engineers are People, too, bEtter Planet, etc. … to make the point [in a fun way] that engineering (and all of our various engineering pathways) are present in everything around us.
Honorable mention logo: Other C (expresses creativity well)
Eliminate the Squares (too rigid), Stripes (too boring) and any with the running man.
LAYOUTS
Prefer fewer photos over the 3- or 4-photo layouts, which force the photos to be too small. Best photo layout is the two-photo arrangement with alternating opaque-ness with word overlays. That would serve us well. We could occasionally interject topical photo or text overlay to coordinate with monthly features (like Black History Month, Engineer’s Week, current event topics such as earthquakes, bridge failures, new technology, etc.)
Prefer the outlined search box layout (found under Circles, Path or Swoop), instead of the heavy-looking color-filled search boxes (blue or orange, found under Squares or Stripes).
TAGLINES
I suggest the following new taglines:
“It’s Your World: Learn-Connect-Design”
or, a variation
“Learn, connect, design your world.”
PHOTOS
Collectively, the photos give a better image of engineering than any single photo (per discipline, etc.). So, use many of these photos in rotating/alternating layouts.
TO ANDI – and everyone else involved – you’ve done a superb job creating so many options from which to choose and comment. Thank you.
34 Joe Tront/Beth/Designer // May 20, 2008 at 11:07 am
Personally I like the Swoop A design. Squares is my next choice. I like the name jumping right out at me. I hope you don’t mind, but I took the liberty of asking Beth for her opinion. Maturally she like the Swoop B or the circles. She in turn took further liberty and asked her boss — a graphic designer. Here are his comments:
Stylistically, I am drawn most to http://epredesign.begins-here.com/squares.html
There are a number of reasons for this.
1. All the ‘logos’ are pretty haphazard and ‘conceptual’ without much
basis in concrete reality, but I like this one visually best of the
choices. the second header graphic on page http://epredesign.begins-here.com/swoops.html (at the bottom with the dotted line structure with the curves, is my
second choice)
2. The menu text in this one wastes less space. The others use black
text with a lot of extra space between letters. For long menu item
names this could force wrapping or rewording the link. On caveat is
that the very light yellow on light green may not have enough contrast
for people with minor vision impairments. (not the ‘blind’, just
regular folks with a little farsightedness or problems with low
contrast).. IE much of the population over 30.
3. The font choices grab me, the page looks ‘clean and elegant’
4. the light blue background color on the search box makes it stand
out well, but not gaudily, such as the orange/peach in http://epredesign.begins-here.com/stripes.html
5. I am a sucker for well used sideways type. Its nice next to the
photos.
6. overall. i like the use of space, and specifically, visually, it
looks like there is less space wasted than the others but there is
still plenty of breathing room. Case in point. The ‘Today in History’
and ‘News and events’ boxes. In other designs they waste more space on
each side, and still do not look as ‘calming’
Taglines didn’t grab me. Something like: “Your avenue to learning” OR “Your link to learning resources” OR perhaps “Link up with us” OR “Linking Learners” OR “Linking Learners to Lovely Living Libraries” came to mind. (ignore the last one — or all of them for that matter.
Hope these help and that I did the right thing by getting additional opinions. Off to Europe tomorrow. Crazy day today.

We have decided to go with the swoop concept for the logo. Go to this website to see some of the other variations and layouts.
